Beginner Woodworking Tip - Start Small

Since early 2018, John McGourty has worked as a consultant for the Braintree, Massachusetts-based National Financial Partners. Aside from finances, John McGourty has had a lifelong passion for woodworking, a hobby he has held since his childhood.

For those just starting out with woodworking as a hobby, it can be quite expensive and intimidating. You can help mitigate the cost and your lack of experience by starting small and working up to more difficult projects as your skills progress.

Starting off with small projects will help you get an idea of the steps involved, regardless of the project itself. You will learn how to plan and design a project before learning how to carry out your project from start to finish. While failing at a big project too early may break your confidence and interest in woodworking, succeeding at a small project will build both your confidence and skill.

As a novice, you likely do not have a fully stocked shop complete with every power tool under the sun. Small projects are ideal because, provided you have the basics, you may not need any extra tools. This also means lower material costs if and when you make a mistake and have to start again.

NFP Acquires North Carolina-based Aquesta Insurance Services

An Atlanta-based college student, John McGourty is pursuing a bachelor of business administration with concentrations in finance and strategy management consulting. Alongside his academic pursuits, John McGourty recently served as a consultant for National Financial Partners (NFP) in Braintree, Massachusetts.

With offices around the globe, NFP offers a variety of insurance brokerage and consultancy services for business and individual clients. In its efforts to expand operations in the southeastern United States, the company recently acquired Aquesta Insurance Services, Inc., a North Carolina-based firm focused on commercial property and casualty (P&C) insurance.

NFP announced the acquisition in July 2018 after finalizing the transaction in late June. As part of the takeover, Ken McGee, former Aquesta Insurance president, will now serve as a director of NFP's P&C division. In addition to expanding its footprint in the Southeast, the acquisition will help NFP enhance its expertise in the area of coastal risk.

Along with acquiring Aquesta, NFP has completed acquisitions with several other companies in recent months. These include 1st Community Insurance Services in California, The Hyde Agency in New Jersey, and Consortia Group in Montreal.
